BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL

RESUME-VITA-PORTFOLIO

IN ANTHROPOLOGY 

 

Many students only begin to think about what they will do with their B.A. degree in their senior year.  However, in today's competitive market students should begin thinking about their career choices and begin building an impressive vita as soon as they begin their studies.  To build a successful vita that will help you acquire either a job or enter graduate school after completing your B.A. you need to  think about the following:

Ø      Begin to create a vita and/or portfolios.  Many employers are moving away from vita’s and resumes and toward web based portfolios that allow an individual to be more creative in their self-presentations.  You can create free portfolio’s on Google.  Below are links to some examples of anthropology student portfolios:

Ø      Apply for Awards, Scholarships, Grants

Ø      Develop Academic Relationships with Faculty

Ø      Present at Local, and if possible, International Conferences

Ø      Publish

Ø      Volunteer your time in related functions, such as local museums, archaeological excavations, oral history projects, medical facilities, non-profit organizations

Ø      Work Part-time in related fields

Ø      Join Clubs and Societies and Volunteer for Leadership Positions

Ø      Request letters of Recommendations at least one month before they are due!

Ø      Arrange Research and Directed-Studies

Ø      Maintain a High GPA

Ø      Keep a list of your Coursework with the titles of the papers and presentations given in those courses as well as personal notes that indicate the skills and knowledge you acquired in the course

Ø      Attend Lectures, Seminars, Workshops, Conferences, and Exhibits at Local Forums (Weedon Island, New College, other USF campuses)

Ø      Talk to Faculty about Internships

 

If you wish to enter graduate school the fall semester after you graduate you must begin to look and make decisions the summer BEFORE  you graduate, as many graduate applications are due in December or January.  For more information on applying to graduate schools see:
